Teachers will:
Explore current research and thought on Internet Safety to develop background knowledge for use in the development of online learning experiences for students.
Develop key points on Internet Safety that can be embedded into lessons for students.
Create a wiki that will be useful in teaching practice for teaching and learning, communication or personal productivity.
Internet Safety
The Internet has provided us with amazing access to a wealth of information and resources. It is a powerful tool for learning, creating, and communicating. Along with such access comes great responsibility. While many schools filter content to keep students safe at school, there are no filters on computers when our students go home or when they access the Internet using their cellphones. Teaching our students to develop online habits that enable them to safely and responsibly navigate the Internet is of the utmost importance.
The slideshows, videos and information presented here are for you to read so that you may be informed about current thought and research regarding Internet safety. Please feel free to share it with your colleagues.
Wikis are collaborative online workspaces. The most well known wiki is, of course, Wikipedia, http://www.wikipedia.org/. In this case, the wiki (collaborative work space) is combined with the power of an encyclopedia (the "pedia" part of the word). This site is a wiki.

Once you create an account (directions provided below in screen shots or in the PDF below) creating pages is easy. After clicking on the edit tab you can create wiki pages the same way you create basic word pages. For advanced users, additional information is provided below in the Word documents
Information for this module will be presented in PDF format so that you may use the presentation page by page as you learn about wikis and set up your own free wikispaces wiki for K12 educators.
The handout will provide information on:
Account set-up
Overview of wiki purpose
Basic step-by-step directions to set-up a basic wiki
The Wikispaces team has created wonderful easy to use tutorials in print and video. You may take advantage of them by clicking on the Help link in the upper right hand side of the Wikispaces screen.
I downloaded the basics and have posted them here in Word documents for your review. The documents are arranged in a step-by-step sequential order working from the top down.
Please use the handouts and Wikispaces videos to guide you as you create a basic wiki with several pages that will be useful to you in your teaching practice for teaching and learning, communication or personal productivity.
For those who may have experience with wikis, please develop some of the advanced features including custom navigation and word clouds.
How can you use a wiki in your position at school for teaching and learning, communication, or personal productivity?
Have you used wikis before? If so, what worked/didn't work well?
How can educators address concerns related to Internet Safety?
I invite you to read all discussion posts that appear on the discussion page and to ask questions of, discuss topics and share thoughts with group members. Please share great examples of wikis and wiki resources.
